RIP Adelina – opened and closed before I had a chance to visit.
Welcome Rockin’ Raw in Brooklyn – I had the Raw Boy sandwich which was truly delicious – and only a short subway trip from Union Square. Please everybody support this amazing raw cafe so that I can go again on my next trip here!
Other highlights:
Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Center – fantastic 360 degree views.
The High Line Park in the Meatpacking District. A beautiful concept, shame there is already evidence of chewing gum on it.
More and more takeaway raw food in the health food shops
The tasting menu at Pure Food and Wine – an opportunity to try almost everything on the menu!
And finally – the Union Square Farmers Market – for when you’ve had just too much gourmet raw food and need some plain salad leaves and heirloom tomatoes.

I have just witnessed something amazing. A butterfly (cabbage white I guess) was fluttering around my vegetables – I just assumed it was going for the kale-ish leaves that are growing (must label plants in future) – and then realised it kept on going back to the same place again and again. I went over to take a look and realised that there were two other white butterflies trapped in some plastic mesh that I had placed over the plants.
Of course I moved the mesh to let them out and the three butterflies flew away. So – the butterfly that kept on returning was obviously trying to free the two trapped ones. Which means that anyone who tries to tell you that insects don’t have a brain or feelings is mistaken!
I am still slightly in awe by what happened. I like to think that it knew I was there and was trying to get my attention – but possibly that is going a bit too far!

1. That indescribable feeling of joy when the train pulls into the station and I know I am home again…

I went to see this at the weekend – and while it is an important film that everyone would benefit from watching, I was very disappointed that there was no mention whatsoever of the connection between climate change and livestock farming. And while I haven’t seen ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ I understand that movie also glosses over this aspect. Mind you I shouldn’t be surprised, we all know how attached people are to eating meat and dairy and we wouldn’t want to upset anyone would we?

I was also handed a flyer from Sustainable Haringey who are planning Haringey Carbon Reduction Fortnight in December. Which is a great idea, don’t get me wrong, but some of the ideas they are putting forward?! ‘Make public transport free for a fortnight’ WHAT?! The tubes and buses are crowded enough as it is, do they really think that it is the cost that is making people use their cars?!

Well actually, that is the only ridiculous suggestion. The rest all make sense to me. Apart from the glaring omission – how about stopping eating meat for those two weeks? Or at least for two days in the fortnight?

Gabriel Cousens has published some data including the following:

Monsanto’s GMO 810 corn causes sterility according to the Austrian Government. The same GMO corn also contains the cauliflower mosaic virus which, when ingested, lowers the bodies CD4 cells to a point which, on immune tests, indicate that a person has HIV/Aids. GMO corn is a staple part of the diet of many parts of Africa. Be aware that in the US most of the corn products sold are GMO – so keep off the tacos and tortillas when you are visiting!

The Gardasil vaccine (which has been manufactured as a so called vaccine against cervical cancer and has been administered to young girls in the US, and possibly here in the UK?) can cause death, collapse and chronic illness in young women and girls, including a new ‘disease’ called Juvenile ALS, a fatal condition in which the nervous system is slowly destroyed while consciousness remains unimpaired. Cervical cancer is easily detected and cured in early stages and is not a major killer of women. Gardasil also contains substances which may cause sterility in women and any protection only lasts a few years anyway.

Catching up on some BBC podcasts I learned that it has been proved that over-fishing is a major factor in climate change. The reason? Fish poo from bony fish such as cod is necessary to keep the ocean water alkaline. Alkaline ocean water is necessary to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Yet again we vegans are helping to save the world….

I hear a rumour that Dragonfly is up for sale, which is a real shame – especially following on from the closure of Raw in Selfridges and Liverpool Street. Soon we will be back just to Vita Organic, the cafe in Daylesford Organic and SAF, all of which are great obviously but I love the atmosphere and garden in Dragonfly. I suggest we all make sure we go there as much as possible to make the most of it before it goes. Of course maybe someone will buy it and turn it into another raw place!

I am a BIG fan of the Superbowl -we won’t be in the US to watch it this year so will miss out on the ads (which I admit I do enjoy) – and it seems everyone will miss out on the following ad from PETA. Obviously there is no room for sense in the mass of ads for Budweiser and all the others that take up the gaps in play.

I guess they don’t want everyone to choke on their nachos and wings.
